Women – How to start fishing as a hobby

23-02-2023

Once you’ve decided it’s a hobby you’d like to pursue, there are a number of ways you can find access besides free fishing off jetties and docks.

Google Meetups groups and see if there are any fishing meetups in your area. If you tell people you’re a beginner, they’ll usually be more than happy to offer advice on how to get started. Attend meetings, read the basics (Google knows everything!), and watch YouTube videos to get great tips from other beginners and pros.

Find the best rod and reel for you and go. Fishing tackle shops will be able to offer advice on gear and you’ll pick up more tips along the way. Your equipment does not have to be expensive, especially for sport fishing. Research reviews on fishing rods of various sizes, the type of fish you’ll likely be looking for locally, and just make sure you have a decent quality reel. Preloaded tackle boxes are a great way to start. A basic tackle box typically includes hooks, sinkers, long nose pliers, or other implements of various sizes to safely handle fish, and standard fishing line. There are a variety of these available depending on the environment in which you will be fishing. Again, ask for advice.

Local fishing charters are a great way to start before you invest time and money as they usually provide all the equipment and help with hooks etc and lots of general advice. Charters are a great outing, either alone or with family and friends, and create a very social environment and a great learning environment.

Join a local fishing/fishing club and get involved in all they have to offer. In addition to the social aspect, fishermen will likely offer to take you out on their boats and there will also be club competitions, general fishing including ladies days and sailing events that you can participate in.

Before you start, you will need a compulsory fishing license which is easily and cheaply available online. Find your state’s website and shop online with options for different time periods; licenses are usually emailed directly to you.

Let your friends know about your new hobby, and let them know you’re willing to drop a line any chance they hear about it. They can even catch the bug!

Happy fishing!
