Tips for traveling to Ajijic in Mexico, the most frequently asked question: is the water safe to drink?

13-04-2023

Visitors to Ajijic tours often ask about drinking water while on vacation in Ajijic. Everyone has heard when traveling to Mexico, “Don’t drink the water.”

These tips will give you a reality check, from the bottom up!

Is the water in Mexico safe to drink?

In the last decade, purified bottled water has experienced something of a revolution in Mexico. Water plants now use space-age microfilters and ozone generators to polish and sterilize water. That means that the bottled water in Mexico is so pure, almost free of minerals, in fact, almost sterile enough to be used in a medical facility. Do not drink water from a hose in the street, or water from a house without adequate filtration, it is common sense.

During your trips to Ajijic, you can enjoy a great vacation without the stomach issues often associated with vacations in Mexico.

Follow 2 simple rules. Rule #1 drink only purified water. Rule #2 wash your hands. Tourists often forget to wash their hands as often as possible when visiting a foreign country. It is the bacteria on your hands that could often be the reason why you may become ill during your visit.

Use tap water to wash hands, after handling money, after using handrails on stairs, etc. and, of course, always before eating or drinking anything. Wash your hands and drink plenty of water for a carefree and healthy vacation.

What about the ice cubes?

Suppose that when you are on vacation in Lake Chapala, Mexico, you order a drink that has ice cubes in it. After all, you are here to relax and enjoy.

Don’t worry, Mexican law says that all ice cubes sold commercially must be made with purified water. Commercially made ice cubes will be round and have a hole in the middle, in case you just believe it when you see it.

Solid blocks of ice are often used to chill shellfish and other foods, and are not drinkable.
