The Medieval Market of Orihuela in Alicante

There are few places where you can have access to so much activity, great sun all year round, friendly people and a very low cost of living, one such place being the province of Alicante in the far southeast of Spain. Much of the reason this part of the world has become so popular in recent years is due to the cheap flights to Alicante that are available from many different airports throughout Europe. Once you are in Alicante, it is the city, the towns and the people that will captivate you and keep you coming back for more. One of those cities is the historic center of Orihuela and one of the best times of the year to be in Orihuela is during the medieval market that is held there.

Every year, in February, Orihuela organizes the Medieval Market Festival. The festival attracts thousands of visitors each year and the number continues to grow with the passage of time.

As its name suggests, the Medieval Market is dedicated to reconstructing the history of the city. Every item and person on the market is, in one way or another, a representation of the past. Attractions include stalls, shops, tournaments and games. Music from medieval times is another addition to this festival, making it a full weekend of celebrations and activities.

The Plaza Marqués de Rafal was the scene of the Orihuela Medieval Market in 2010. The number of visitors exceeded that of all previous years and the market was a joyous gathering of people from all over the world. The market was arranged in the old town of Orihuela and included the important historical monuments of the city. Visitors were able to walk the length of the market enjoying not only the sights and organized activities, but also the archaeological heritage of the charming city. Orihuela’s five national monuments and traditional streets provided the Medieval Market with the right atmosphere and atmosphere to set the stage.

A delight for all the senses, the market stalls had everything one could imagine. From the sumptuous and delicious cuisine of Orihuela. The smells of the market were part of the delicious enjoyment of the event as they poured out from the many food stalls to entice the visitors.

Among the places of interest are men, women and children dressed in traditional costumes selling their wares. There was something for everyone: cakes, tapas, stew, boiled octopus, Arabic tea and red wine; woodcarvers, handmade jewelry, furniture, and toys; workshops, plays, shooting ranges, dance corners and pets.
