Depending on your career, industry, or field, you may be expected to attend a conference for training, development, or representation of your company or business. Conferences are great places to network. They give you the opportunity to meet people, get information and resources, market/promote your brand, and use your skills on a larger scale. It is imperative that you are prepared for this type of role so that you are more efficient in your efforts and goals. Whether you are an exhibitor, presenter or attendee, the benefits can be enormous.

Here are some practical tips for making the right connections and getting the most out of conferencing.

Pre planned

Don’t leave your network unlucky. Be sure to register in advance. First of all, it’s a courtesy to the conference organizer. In addition, your correct information is collected so that you can be informed of any future changes or events with the host/sponsoring organization. Pre-registering, instead of walking, also gives you access to useful information before the event, such as: a detailed agenda/programme, the speakers (and their biographies/contact information), travel or accommodation discounts, tips for a conference no hassle experience etc. Definitely take the time to read the information provided and plan accordingly.

hone your skills

Before the conference, practice your elevator pitch. Make sure it’s concise, effective, and under 60 seconds. Bring plenty of up-to-date resources such as: resumes, business cards, marketing/promotional items, etc. Write questions to create a good dialogue with new people. Being able to answer simple questions like: What do you do? Why did you attend this event? Who do you want to know? What do you want to get from this program? Being properly prepared not only increases your level of awareness, but also shows professionalism and credibility.

stay connected

Do your due diligence and be strategic in following up with individuals or companies after the conference. It shows that you are serious about business and building quality relationships. Use the follow-up process to introduce people to your existing contacts, share conference information, and meet later via conference call, in person, or at another event. Value the connections made and focus on growing your networks.

Use these simple tips to advance your networking and get the most out of conferences and similar events. Be purposeful and strategic in your interactions and engagements to build valuable connections.
