These last 10 months I have embarked on an incredibly technical journey. When deciding that I would set up a virtual campus online, I knew that I would need all the help I could get. As a website builder, I am a complete newbie. HTML what? So once I decided that the moodle learning platform was my vehicle, I needed to learn, fairly quickly, how to drive.

A Google search turned up some posts on Moodle and I chose Jason Coles ‘Using Moodle’. I chose this post because it really got to the point. Using Moodle. Yes, that’s what I would do a lot. This makes sense. Incredibly, humans are more apt to learn when what they are learning makes sense. This is what I think is part of that instinctive scenario. So trusting my instincts, I eagerly awaited the arrival of my personal copy of ‘Using Moodle’.

Everything was ready. My moodle – EMPTY moodle – was ready to go and be built. I opened my moodle post and was laughing. Unbelievably, the preface describes what moodle really is like exceptionally well! You might be wondering “Well, of course, that seems pretty obvious.” I have read and received a number of technical publications that assume that the reader already has a PhD in the subject area! What I feel rather defeats the purpose of a text if you are writing for those who already know!

Step by step I read my moodle bible and step by step I created an amazing virtual campus! Throughout the book, I was so excited for the content to match the scenario I was experiencing on my computer screen. This kind of consistency in technical text is sometimes very difficult to achieve, as technology moves at the speed of light.

Jason Cole is participating in your explanations of some potentially boring, rather technical content. The fact that it makes you feel so successful with what you’re building outweighs any technical issues. Cole beautifully integrates this exciting new knowledge into his previous teaching and learning experiences. He is constantly offering suggestions for classroom integration and how to stay sane throughout the process!

Reading this book has taken my life, my learning, and my teaching in a whole new direction. Technology is bringing exciting experiences to all who are ready to embrace it!
