How to make Gluhwein

There may be thousands of gluhwein recipes floating around the world, from simple recipes with just a few ingredients to secret family recipes with numerous tasty additives. In my experience, everything is delicious and I have yet to drink a cup of gluhwein that I didn’t like. So here are two ways to make gluhwein: the traditional way and the easy way.

How to make Gluhwein the old fashioned way

Here is a simple recipe with no special flavors added. Some gluhwein recipes have more citrus, while others have a nutty flavor, and still others lean toward woody aromas. This recipe is a simple blend of basic spices and makes enough to generously serve ten to twelve people:


Gluhwein Recipe

Ingredients

2 bottles of red wine

1 cup of sugar

2 cups of water

1/2 lemon, sliced

20 whole teeth

1 teaspoon nutmeg

6 to 8 cinnamon sticks

Mix the water, lemon and spices and simmer for one hour. Strain. heat target do not boil red wine Add the wine to the hot water mixture. Pour the gluhwein into mugs and serve with half a slice of orange for garnish.

You’ll find it easier and less messy to make gluhwein if you have a tea ball or clove and cinnamon cheesecloth.

How to make Gluhwein the easy way

The easiest way to make gluhwein is to use Jodlers gluhwein mix, which you can buy online.

To do it using gluhwein mix, simply:


1. Heat your wine

2. For a dash of gluhwein mix

3. Stir and serve

Gluhwein is exceptionally popular in European countries, especially during the Christmas holidays, and goes by many names (depending on the language). Here are some other names, by country, for gluhwein:

English = Mulled Wine, Spiced Wine, or Gluehwein

German = Gluhwein (sparkling wine) or Gluehwein (more or less the English version)

French = mulled wine

italian = burnt wine

Romanian = proud wine

Swedish = Glogg (pronounced gloog)

Hungarian = Forralt bor (mulled wine)
