The various forms of vitamin B are very essential for the proper functioning of the body, since deficiency can cause damage, ranging from mild to severe. Basically, vitamin B, and specifically vitamin B12, is responsible for various metabolic activities in the body, and therefore deficiency can lead to serious problems such as asthma, anemia, neurological disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Vegetarians have been found to be more prone to diseases derived from vitamin B deficiency because this vitamin is found more in clams, red meat, mollusks, some species of fish, and the like. When looking for foods that contain vitamin B, it is clear that most animal foods contain at least one type of vitamin B. The choice of foods that contain vitamin B for vegetarians is limited to spirulina and nori that contain vitamin B12 and other vegetarian foods fortified with vitamin B 12, such as nutirgain products, nutritional yeast and soy analogs. Tempeh is a good source of vitamin B12.

Although the concentration of vitamin B is higher in meat and meat products, it is also found in bananas, potatoes, beans, and molasses. Lean meat, fish, tofu, seeds, and sunflower seeds contain vitamin B3 which is niacin. Vitamin B6 is found in foods such as chicken, tuna, salmon, shrimp, lentils, beers, yeast, soy, candy, peas, walnuts, peanut butter, bananas, carrots, brown rice, bran, and whole wheat flour. Vitamin B5 is found in eggs, wheat germ, whole grains, lentils, and peanuts.

Vitamin B12 is not easily absorbed into the body and therefore some people find it difficult to maintain good levels of vitamin B12. For these people, taking vitamin B supplements will be of great help. Vitamin B12 is produced by bacteria and fungi, but it is not found in yeasts or higher plants, in general. These friendly bacteria reside in the gastrointestinal tract of animals and therefore vitamin B12 can only be found in meat products in large quantities. Interestingly, exercise helps produce the active form of vitamin B6.
