Bermuda, officially known as the Bermuda Islands or the Sommers Islands, is a British territory located approximately 65 miles off the coast of the United States.

Established in 1612, its capital, Hamilton, is the oldest and most populous continuously inhabited English city in the Americas. the largest island, main island, sometimes he calls himself Bermuda Islands. Compiling a list of the islands is often difficult, as many have more than one name.

With finance being its largest sector, Bermuda has a very prosperous economy, tourism being the second largest industry on the islands.

Discovered in 1503 by Juan de Bermúdez, it became a stopover place to replenish ships with water and meat. Due to the legends about spirits and demons, it soon gained the name “Island of Devils”. The many stories of ships and planes that disappeared in the confines of the Bermuda Triangle soon fueled the fire further. To this day a certain mystique surrounds the entire Bermuda area as well as many miles to the south.

Judging from first-hand experience, the seas can be treacherous. During a 7-day cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Bermuda and Nassau, we experienced 20-foot seas for 30 hours, all while the weather was perfectly sunny and beautiful. I can appreciate how ships from an earlier era would not survive.

Surviving high seas, it made landfall at the Royal Navy Pier around 4 pm on Sunday. Walking ashore, it was soon discovered that even though she had just docked a large cruise ship, all the shops were closed and would not open until the next morning. It was nice to see that there is still some place on this planet where Sunday observance and traditional values outweigh the might of the almighty dollar.

Having spent an enjoyable evening strolling the Royal Navy Pier and discovering its many unique features, it was time to retire and look forward to the next day’s adventures.

One of the great things about Bermuda is cheap transportation, a full day’s fare on all available forms of transportation, everything from water taxis to buses, can be had for a measly $6.

Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda, is a modern, clean and upbeat city with all the amenities and shops found in any American city, combine this with British formality and you have a recipe for an enjoyable experience.

Our tour of St. George’s was delightful and the driver told us all about the history and unique features of the island.

After a seaside lunch and a walking tour of the city of St. Georges, it was back on the bus for the ride back to our floating hotel.
