Ways to tame an older dog

If you have just brought an older dog into your home, he may need to be educated. If the dog starts to go to the bathroom indoors, this could be for a number of reasons. First, it could simply be that the dog has never been properly trained, and second, that it has been through some stressful circumstances in its life that have led to indoor potty training. As such, you will have to train the dog yourself. Here are ways to train a senior dog.

There are three times of the day when a dog usually goes to the bathroom. This will be in the morning when you first wake up, at night before they go to sleep, and 30 minutes to an hour after they have eaten. They will therefore be the moments in which you will have to be especially attentive to them going to the bathroom.

It is a good idea, therefore, to start taking the dog out at the times mentioned above. When you take the dog out and he’s right to use the bathroom outside the house the way he should, praise him by giving him a treat and patting him on the head.

When the dog is indoors, be sure to restrain it within certain areas of the house and turn off all places, such as living rooms and bedrooms. You should also keep the animal in sight at all times when you are around.

When you take your dog out and he does not defecate or urinate as you might expect, it will be important to bring him back inside and then take him out again 20 to 30 minutes later.

It is also important to establish a feeding schedule for the animal. Feed them at regular times in the evening and in the morning if you wish. Be sure to adhere to the schedule and to remove the animal as indicated above between 30 minutes and an hour after each feeding.

If the dog ends up walking in, then you should have some proper punishment methods ready to go. These should not be too harsh, as this will not help at all. If you do these things, your dog should be housebroken in no time.
