Feeling stressed: do this first


There are so many causes of stress these days. It can often sneak up on us without realizing it or it can be a major fight due to perhaps an unpleasant event.

Regardless of what causes us stress, it is important that we try to overcome it and take steps to reduce it. There are all kinds of ways and methods to manage and reduce stress that alone can make your head spin, but what do you do first?

This is the first action you should take when feeling stressed for whatever reason – just take a moment to think about it and identify exactly what is bothering you. Be as specific as you can.

Write your thoughts on a piece of paper, your mobile device, your laptop, or anywhere you like. What is causing the stress, why is it making you feel stressed, what can you do about it.

Just by taking that step, you will begin to monitor and seek to reduce your stress levels.

Break it up into chunks and tackle one at a time, starting with what you think is easiest.

When you start to put into practice the steps you have written to manage your stress, add it to your notes as well. This will be built into a valuable visual tool that you can refer to over and over again so you can see what you are doing and how effective you are being.

You will be surprised how much just writing things down helps you take the weight off your shoulders. Especially at bedtime if stress is keeping you awake.

As you cross out the little things, you can move on to anything that causes you higher levels of stress. Again, check out your notes and add them breaking everything down into practical steps.

As you take continuous action based on your notes, you should begin to regain control, feel better, and reduce and manage your stress.

Simple steps in many aspects of our lives are often the most effective. Identify the root of the problem and what you can do to prevent it from being the first step. Stress reduction and management are no different.

Start now. There must be something that you feel stressed about to some degree. Grab that pen and paper, iPad, laptop and start writing.

There is no right or wrong order, just record it. What is bothering you, why and what are you going to do about it.

This is just a stress management technique. There are many others.
